Another major spark this Eid season comes through the literary adaptation of “Masud Rana”, one of Bangladesh’s most iconic fictional characters. Adapted from the beloved spy-thriller series created by Qazi Anwar Hussain, the film arrives carrying decades of nostalgia and towering audience expectations. For generations who grew up reading the adventures of the legendary spy, the Eid release marks more than just another commercial film — it is the cinematic arrival of a cultural phenomenon many have long waited to see on screen. For director Saikat Nasir and his team, that anticipation comes with equal measures of pressure and confidence. “We’re very excited,” the filmmaker said while discussing the final stages of preparation. “I hope audiences truly enjoy the hard work we’ve put into this.
We want our effort to add something extra to the joy of Eid.” Still, he admitted the pressure has not disappeared. “Of course, there’s nervousness,” he smiled. “But I’m confident that, Inshallah, the public will like it.” The expectations surrounding “Masud Rana” are especially high because of the legacy attached to the character. Readers who spent their childhood immersed in the adventures of the fictional spy have long waited to see the story adapted properly for the screen. Asked whether he feels confident about satisfying those fans, the director explained that preserving the essence of the original work was one of the production’s main priorities. “We tried to do the maximum possible within Bangladesh’s capabilities,” he said. “Most importantly, we wanted to ensure the spirit of the story was not lost. That was our biggest practice throughout the process.” According to him, even the film’s promotional campaign was designed to reconnect audiences with the nostalgia of the books. “The way people instantly recognised the references during our promotions made us feel encouraged,” he explained. “We used elements inspired by the original book covers and the early title designs.
Today we’re releasing the trailer, and altogether I think audiences will understand how sincerely we’ve tried to bring back that nostalgic feeling.” One of the most talked-about aspects of the production has been the selection of the lead actor, reportedly chosen through a talent hunt process. The director acknowledged that the lengthy delay behind the film stemmed from multiple reasons, many of them beyond the team’s control. “The film is being produced by Jazz Multimedia, and naturally, they wanted the casting and overall presentation to feel perfect,” he said. “At the same time, there were complications surrounding government permissions in different locations.” Because the story explores the early journey of Masud Rana — including how he transitions from a military major into joining the intelligence world — the production required military-related costumes, props, and logistical support for several scenes. “We needed army permissions for various sequences,” he revealed. “Without those approvals, it wasn’t possible to complete the shoot or finalise the work properly. We were waiting until the very last moment for those permissions.” Despite the setbacks, the filmmaker believes audiences will not feel the long production gap when they finally watch the film. “We’ve tried our best to maintain the quality and consistency throughout,” he said. With several major films releasing this Eid, Saikat Nasir also spoke warmly about the industry as a whole. “I definitely want to watch everyone’s films,” he said. “First, I’ll watch my own film in theatres, then one by one I want to see the others as well.” More importantly, he stressed that the success of all Eid releases matters for Bangladeshi cinema collectively. “I want every Bangladeshi film to do well,” he added. “If all the films succeed, the entire industry moves forward.
From what I’ve seen already, most of the upcoming films look very promising in terms of quality.”
