Former Nigeria defender, Ben Iroha, has exclusively told Completesports.com that the three-time AFCON winners, Super Eagles, showed class in Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe’s Warriors in the opening game of the 2026 Unity Cup Tournament at The Valley, Charlton, London. Iroha also proclaimed that Rangers International are the ‘true’ and ‘deserving’ champions of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, which concluded on Sunday, 24 May 2026, across the country. Two goals — one in each half — from Millwall forward, Femi Azeez, proved decisive as the Super Eagles raced to a comfortable 2-0 victory in the Unity Cup clash.

Super Eagles Displayed Character And Confidence — Iroha “This is the best way to begin a new chapter — a chapter of rebuilding,” Iroha said of the Super Eagles’ performance against Zimbabwe. “I must say the team showed class and character. A team with many new players displaying such understanding and confidence gives hope that they will do much better with time.” Super Eagles Can Achieve Great Things If They Stay Focused Asked if the Super Eagles’ performance against Zimbabwe could be a pointer to winning the Unity Cup title, Iroha said it was still too early to make predictions, stressing that the sky would be their limit if they maintained focus. “It’s still too early to speculate.
But a ‘new’ team playing that way means there is a lot to expect. “You know the opening match of every competition is always difficult. But these Eagles have raised our hopes and aspirations for something big. Let them keep their confidence and focus; anything can happen.” Also Read: Unity Cup: We’ve Found A Star For The Future —Sodje Reacts To Azeez Super Eagles Debut The former Golden Eaglets assistant coach, who helped Nigeria win the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, also reflected on the concluded 2025/2026 NPFL season, describing Rangers as worthy champions. Rangers Deserved NPFL Title After Dramatic Season “That was a fantastic season, I must say — a season that kept everyone on edge. “But I must say Rangers showed character and focus throughout the season, and I think they are the true and deserving winners. “Rivers United gave them a good fight for the title.
The trophy could have gone either way because, at a point in the season, Rivers United held the advantage with about four games in hand as a result of their CAF Champions League engagements. “But if you ask me, I would say fatigue affected them, so they could not cope with the fixture congestion. That’s football for you, and I must say kudos to Rangers for winning the NPFL title, their ninth title in history.”
