A 71-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death during a dispute over the construction of a bathroom on contested land in Faridpur’s Boalmari upazila today. The deceased was identified as Firoza Begum, wife of late Muktar Molla of Bonchaki village under Chatul union. The incident took place around 11:30am in Bonchaki village, police and family members said.
According to police and family, Firoza had long been involved in a dispute with Tulu Mia and his family of neighbouring Ramchandrapur village over her father’s property. Family members alleged that Firoza came under attack when she went to supervise work for a sewerage line connected to a bathroom being built on the disputed land this morning. Firoza was taken to Boalmari Upazila Health Complex after becoming critically injured, where doctors declared her dead. Sabur Nesa, sister of the deceased, alleged that Firoza was killed over the land dispute. “Our land had been occupied forcibly.
When we went to build a bathroom there, my mother was beaten to death. I want justice for her killing,” said Azizur Molla, son of the victim. Md Jalal Sikder, a member of Chatul Union Parishad, said a court case over the land is still pending between the two parties. Confirming the incident, Md Anowar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Boalmari Police Station, told The Daily Star that the body was brought to the police station from the hospital. “The body will be sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital tomorrow for autopsy.
Legal procedures are underway,” he said.
